Unique polymer pump liners
reduce   FGD scrubber problems

The copper producer initially employed the O.E.M. supplied replaceable rubber liners without satisfaction. Realizing that urethane in similar applications provide better wear resistance, the decision was made to go to cast in place urethane in the pump casings. A substantial improvement in wear life was achieved. However, the logistics and risks involved with cast in place liners was not desirable due to:

Excellthane
replaceable 14"x12" pump liners are designed to provide and "OEM" quality fit.

  • Heavy expensive pump casings had to be shipped on and off the property.

  • Repeated heat cycling to remove cast in place urethane for reclining resulted in thermal fatigue and cracking of the casing.

  • Urethane of inconsistent composition and wear life was encountered.

Excellthane pump liners provide superior protection against abrasion.

SOLUTION:
Radiant, with its
» Engineering
» Tooling
designed and produced replaceable urethane liners. The liners meet or exceeded O.E.M. fit specifications. A special insert design was incorporated to prevent liner collapse under sudden pressure drop.

Because of Excellthane's quality control from raw material certification through production, the copper producer is receiving a consistent higher quality , high performance Excellthane product.

FOLLOW-UP:

Performance of the Excellthane liners have exceeded expectation. In addition to eliminating cast in place liners, Excellthane has demonstrated significantly longer wear life compared to the material previously employed. The copper producer estimated that use of Excellthane will reduce their pump liner costs by 75%.

Excellthane provides a comprehensive range of urethane based products. Contact Excellthane for further information on how we can engineer solutions to reduce costs associated with abrasion and corrosion.

EXCELLTHANE
Excellthane is a member of proprietary high quality, high performance Excellthane which have been designed specifically for demanding material handling applications. Excellthane properties of high resilence, high elongation and low modulus combine to provide superior resistance to abrasion and impact.

Excellthane provides Excellthane along with other performing Excellthane in a comprehensive line of replaceable pump, cyclone and flotation parts for all major O.E.M. units.

In addition, Excellthane provides custom designed parts for grate discharge Autogenous, S.A.G. and Ball mills. Excellthane is also the leading manufacturer of Excellthane line pipe. Excellthane lined pipe is unexcelled in quality and has been selected on all major international pipe projects which demand long term protection.

EXCELLTHANE PUMP LINERS AND IMPELLERS
A COST EFFECTIVE SOLUTION

EXCELLTHANE COMPOUND SIGNIFICANTLY OUTLASTS COMPETITIVE URETHANES IN FIELD TESTING!!

Installed in slurry pumps in the mineral processing and power generation industries, Excellthane parts have shown 2 to 3 times the wear life of other urethane and rubber parts.

Excellthane parts are currently available for a wide variety of slurry pump makes and sizes.

Excellthane pump parts are available for many common sizes and manufacturers of pumps. All Excellthane pump parts are manufactured from high quality aluminum and epoxy molds, specifically designed to ensure dimensional accuracy for an "GEM" quality fit.

EXCELLTHANE PUMP PARTS:

» Outlast conventional urethane and rubber liners in most slurry applications .
» Are reinforced with steel for support.
» Are easy to install
» Are lightweight.
» Are dimensionally accurate to assure pump efficiency.

Engineered  Solutions to Abrasion and Corrosion Problems

EXCELLTHANE PARTS ARE:

  • Highly resistant to sliding and impact abrasion,

  • Engineered to outwear conventional polyurethanes, rubber, polyethylenes and basalt.

  • Lightweight-easy, safe and economical to install and maintain .

  • Dimensionally accurate to ensure highly efficient performance

  • Sound absorbing-reduces in-plant noise.

  • Cost effective. Excellthane cast parts outperform conventional parts, reducing maintenance downtime and replacement costs.

Pump Liner Failures
Faced with an extremely high failure rate of soft rubber pump liners and no satisfactory alternative materials from the pump manufacturers, a major power company in the southwest installed Excellthane liners in its FGD scrubber recycle pumps in 1986.

Excellthane is a proprietary urethane, originally formulated by Excellthane Systems, Hibbing, MN, for the mining and mineral processing industries. This material uniquely combines the toughness of a corrosion-, impact- and wear-resistant polymer with the resilience of soft natural rubber. These engineered properties plus a low C factor (low coefficient of friction) enable our products to outwear rubber, basalt, flakeglass, epoxy resins, polyethylenes, conventional polyurethanes and unprotected iron and steel.

The high failure rate of soft rubber pump liners due to abrasion, impact and wear can also contribute to suction-screen plugging problems which, in turn, create cavitation and addition- al damage to conventional rubber liners. When suction screens are plugged by gypsum scale, rubber debris or other tramp materials, vacuums are pulled on the FGD pumps. In severe situations, this can quickly lead to additional problems by drawing the unsupported rubber liners into the pump impellers where they are grooved and torn. With a higher flexural modulus of elasticity, Excellthane is inherently stiffer than conventional rubber pump liners. This engineered property plus full metal inserts enable the unique polymer liners to resist deformation under vacuum, thus minimizing unscheduled outages even when suction screens are plugged.

As pump liners, pump impellers, duct liners and lined pipe, our engineered polymers withstand the highly corrosive, abrasive and sulfurous/sulfuric acid working environments of FGD scrubbers.

An Early Installation

The installation in the southwest, one of the earliest applications for Excellthane FGD pump liners, was initiated for three reasons:

  • The abrasion rate of the soft rubber liners was excessive.

  • Chunks of gypsum scale were peeling off the thick rubber tips of the impellers.

  • Pluggage of suction screens caused cavitation, which accelerated the failure of rubber liners.

Replaceable pump liners are easy
to install in power plants

Rugged liners reduce maintenance
downtime and replacement costs

The maintenance superintendent for the power plant reports a three-to-one wear life superiority for Excellthane pump liners. "This product and its application are as good as it gets. " As a result, only Excellthane liners are now used in all of this plant's scrubber recycle pumps. Equivalent successes were experienced in this power plant and other power generation facilities with Excellthane lined pipe and agitator propeller linings cast with our proprietary polymers.

In addition to long-wearing pump liners, Excellthane provides lined piping and fittings (including elbows and tees) for all types of FGD scrubber systems. Our lined pipe, developed in the 1970s to withstand severe abrasion in mining and mineral processing, protects FGD sump and slurry lines as well as the disposal piping for ash and other particulates.
